The New York Times on Cathedrals

Release, then clench. Release, then clench again. Everything about the Bay Area duo Cathedrals follows this simple, striking pattern. The singer Brodie Jenkins has a voice that’s both pulpy and ethereal — she leans heavy into big words, her voice robust, then fading ever so dreamily. (Ms. Jenkins is a versatile singer — as a teenager, she was signed to a country music label as part of a family band.)

At the same time, the multi-instrumentalist Johnny Hwin plays music that’s both sultry and tender, never letting things get too twee. The result, as heard on the duo’s outstanding self-titled EP (released last year on Neon Gold), is, in essence, synthetic R&B with 1980s rock swagger. It’s propulsive but oozy, intimate but highly scalable.
