Since it’s inaugural airing in the spring of 1998, WNYU’s ‘The Halftime Show’ has evolved into a staple of New York City’s Hip Hop scene and fans have made a ritual of tuning their radios to 89.1FM every Wednesday night at 10:30.
DJ Eclipse & DJ Riz, along with Lynn Gonzalez, first took ‘The Halftime Show’ to the airwaves as an outlet to break new artists that are now household names and give records airplay that likely would not have received radio attention otherwise. 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Eminem, & Big L were just a handful of the score of artists to visit the show before achieving worldwide fame while further demonstrating The Halftime Show’s credibility and ability to forecast stars early on.
Simultaneously DJs Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Garcia were winding down their 8 year run down the dial on Columbia University’s WKCR, putting the weight on the Halftime Show’s shoulders to feed the city’s need for real Hip Hop music and studio freestyle sessions.
The show’s founders DJ Eclipse & DJ Riz will host a special celebratory 15 year anniversary event on 8/29 at Le Poisson Rouge where they’ll be joined by close friends and fellow NYC Hip Hop associates DJ Premier and Stretch Armstrong. Expect plenty of special surprise guests to make an appearance and perform on the night in tribute to a New York mainstay; hosted by D-Stroy & Lord Sear.
