Let A Frown Be Your Umbrella: Two evenings celebrating Kranky Records
LPR is proud to present two evenings with Kranky label artists LOSCIL, BENOIT PIOULARD, STEVE HAUSCHILDT & FORMA.
The first evening presents sonorous, Pacific Northwest ambient music with two of its most celebrated composers of slow-motion, beatific sounds: Loscil & Benoît Pioulard. Beyond the notions of passive ornamental embellishment, both performers are sculptors of sonic narrative from the colluvium of ambient music’s rawest materials.
The second night plays host to the evolving field improvisation and non-rock forms. Dismantling both the synthesizer central roles and showmanship in rock music for a larger lexicon of expressive frontiers, theirs is a more variegated and polychromatic realization of these electric instruments and their still undiscovered potential. This is a lissom flexing of the tools of psychedelic and kosmische music into applications wholly mutagenic and hybrid, circuitous and serpentine in their paths away from tradition.

Steve Hauschildt is an American electronic musician and recording artist who resides in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the seminal band Emeralds from 2006-2013. A veteran of the experimental music community, Steve’s compositions have utilized synthesizers, computers and digital processing to both honor and subvert established norms in electronic music. In addition to the prolific output of Emeralds, Steve has released three full-length albums on Kranky, an anthology of his work on Editions Mego and has curated a compilation for Air Texture. He is currently finalizing a new album to be released in late 2016.
Formed in 2010 by Mark Dwinell in Brooklyn, FORMA’s combustible mixture of lush synth explorations and frenetic rhythm has captivated the margins of the international synth scene since their 2011 debut on John Elliott’s influential Spectrum Spools label. Following 2012’s darker OFF/ON, the trio set course toward the perimeter of the dance floor, releasing their COOL HAPTICS EP on The Bunker New York in 2014. Physicalist, their debut on Kranky, features new member and multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett, along with George Bennett on percussion. FORMA’s celebrated live performances — extended improvisational journeys veering from the ecstatic to the foreboding — draw techno, noise, and synth disciples into their realm.
