Stand Atlantic
Melodic Australian pop punk outfit Stand Atlantic rode a wave of well-crafted indie releases and years of hard touring to a pair of prominent label deals, the latter of which resulted in the 2018 release of their debut album, Skinny Dipping, on Hopeless Records. The band formed in Sydney in 2014 with an original lineup of singer/guitarist Bonnie Fraser, bassist David Potter, guitarist Arthur Taak, and drummer Jordan Jansons. Following a self-released single, “Breakaway,” Jansons was replaced on drums by Jonno Panichi who played on their debut EP, 2015’s A Place Apart. Over the next two years, Stand Atlantic worked hard to establish themselves, doing major tours with bands like As It Is, State Champs, and Cute Is What We Aim For. With the departure of second guitarist Taak, they slimmed down to a trio and in 2017 became the first Australian act to sign with Italian pop-punk specialists Rude Records. With the strength of a label behind them, they landed the opening slot on New Found Glory’s sold-out Australian tour in the summer of 2017 and released their label debut, the Sidewinder EP, in September, earning positive reviews and support from Triple J radio. A European tour supporting Britain’s ROAM rounded out their calendar for the year, and they kicked off 2018 touring Australia with American band Knuckle Puck. The September release of their next single, “Lavender Bones,” was coupled with announcement that they had signed with high-profile U.S. label Hopeless Records. A month later, Stand Atlantic delivered their full-length debut, Skinny Dipping. The album was a big success among genre fans, hitting 25 million streams in just a couple of years. Their 2020 follow-up Pink Elephant saw them take a more experimental approach, with slick, electronic-sounding production that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a contemporary pop album.

With Confidence
Formed in 2012 by a group of high school mates, With Confidence is an Australian band that carries the blink-182, All Time Low, and Yellowcard torch of pop-punk. Covering topics like mental health, relationships, and loss with huge earworm choruses and punchy riffs, they made waves in 2016 with their Hopeless Records debut, Better Weather, and continued to find success both at home and abroad with subsequent efforts like Love and Loathing (2018) and With Confidence (2021). Fronted by vocalist/bassist Jayden Seeley, the original lineup also consisted of drummer Joshua Brozzesi and guitarist Sam Haynes. The trio recruited guitarist Inigo Del Carmen soon after their formation and began recording debut song “Stand Again” in 2013. Their debut EP, Youth, was released later that year. In early 2014, Haynes parted ways with the band and was replaced by touring guitarist Luke Rockets. The newly formed quartet recorded their sophomore EP Distance with Stevie Knight and Dave Petrovic (Hands Like Houses, Tonight Alive, Northlane) and issued the set in early 2015. After signing with Hopeless Records a year later, With Confidence announced their debut album. Preceded by singles “Voldemort,” “We’ll Be Okay,” and “Keeper,” Better Weather was released in June 2016 and peaked at number 22 on the ARIA Charts. Guitarist Luke Rockets left the fold in November 2017 ahead of the release of their sophomore studio effort, Love and Loathing, which arrived in July 2018 and marked the band’s first appearance on the Billboard 200. Longtime touring guitarist Scott McLaughlin joined the group as an official member shortly therafter and made his studio debut on the band’s eponymous third full-length effort, which arrived in 2021. ~ Neil Z.
