The Checkout will present VENUS, a new project by singer/pianist/composer Samora Pinderhughes and producer Jack DeBoe. Pinderhughes, a Juilliard-trained rising music star, recently released an album with August Greene, the cross-over jazz/r&b outfit led by Robert Glasper, Common, and Karriem Riggins, as well as released a new song with Common for the HBO film The Tale. This show will be captured for The Checkout from WBGO and hosted by Simon Rentner.

Jack DeBoe

Jack DeBoe has been performing on stages for almost 30 years. Currently based out of New York City, he has had the great honor and privilege of working with people whose artistry serves as inspiration and influence to his own. His recent endeavors include collaborations with Meshell Ndegeocello, Bob Power, Jon Batiste, YEBBA, Marcus Strickland, and Emily King.

His passion for learning and interest in music, dance, film, and technology has informed his unique perspective as an artist; expanding his skills past drumming and into the realms of music production, recording, and mixing.

Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a composer/pianist/vocalist, known for large multidisciplinary projects and for his use of music to examine sociopolitical issues. A graduate of Juilliard, Samora has performed in venues including the White House, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with artists including Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, and Emily King. His album The Transformations Suite was released in October 2016 to great acclaim, recently profiled in the NY Times & NPR.

A composer for film and theatre as well, Samora is the musical director for the Public Theater’s #BARS workshop, and is a Sundance Composers Lab fellow for film scoring. He has written songs for Common, Lalah Hathaway, and more. Samora is also a member of Blackout for Human Rights, the arts & social justice collective founded by Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay; and was musical director for their #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. He most recently scored the documentary “Whose Streets”, which opened this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

As Music Supervisor for the Brooklyn Nets’ debut at Barclays Center, J.PERIOD’s custom-curated soundtrack won rave reviews as the new standard for music in the NBA arena (ESPN). J.PERIOD also produced the Nets’ opening theme song in 2013 and 2014.
