New York-based noise-rock group Uniform combine multiple schools of noise — industrial music, thrash metal, and power electronics — to create an all-consuming wall of catharsis. After debuting with a self-released EP in 2014, the duo released acclaimed albums on labels such as Alter and Sacred Bones , each release harsher and angrier than the last. Following the politically charged 2017 full-length Wake in Fright, Uniform toured with Portland-based duo the Body , and the two acts began working together, starting with 2018’s Mental Wounds Not Healing.

Ben Greenberg ( the Men , Pygmy Shrews) and Michael Berdan (Drunkdriver, York Factory Complaint ) formed Uniform in 2013 when they realized that they lived on the same street; the sudden revelation quickly gave birth to their eponymous debut 12″. Wanting to remain a duo while performing live, they utilized a setup consisting of drum machines, bass synthesizers, and a wall of amplifiers; this allowed Greenberg and Berdan to focus on guitar and vocals, respectively. Their debut full-length, Perfect World, surfaced in 2015 on Alter Records , and not only saw them continuing their predilection for using basic equipment, but pushing it to the absolute limit. The following year, Uniform made the move to boundary-pushing label Sacred Bones , marking the occasion with another 12″, “Ghosthouse.”

Their sophomore album, Wake in Fright, released in early 2017, was framed as a reflection of a world at war with itself; to further their point, they scoured sample packs, action movies, and field recordings for sounds of violence with which to program their equipment, including gunshots for snare hits and explosions for the kick drum. Uniform then toured with another extreme noise-rock duo, the Body , and the two acts began working together. Berdan contributed to the Body ‘s 2018 full-length, I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer., and the collaborative album Mental Wounds Not Healing appeared soon afterwards. Uniform then joined forces with drummer Greg Fox for the full-length The Long Walk, which also appeared in 2018. A second collaboration with the Body , Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back, was released in 2019. Shame, Uniform’s first album to feature drummer Mike Sharp, arrived in 2020.
