This past July at National Sawdust, with a sold out audience and critical acclaim, Selkie Projects & The NYU Game Center launched a new ongoing series centered on video game playthroughs presenting the New York Premiere of the first fully interactive live performance of the musical score to the award winning video game “Journey” – the first video game score to ever be nominated for a Grammy.
Building a conversation around the social, educational, and artistic impact of games, each performance or immersive experience takes on a slightly different approach or theme for an evening focusing on a major game with a student from the Game Center premiering his or her project beforehand. Think of this as the “opening act”. We’ve timed our performances around events at the Game Center, with talks by the world’s top innovative developers, then we invite young developers and composers to attend a meet & greet with the hopes of facilitating lasting creative partnerships across platforms.
On November 12th, we’ve teamed up with Rockband for the premiere of the game in Virtual Reality, featuring Soft Body as the opening act. This evening hosted at LPR in conjunction with the Game Center’s Practice and will feature a brief talk by the Rockband creators.
Rock Band VR is the closest most people will ever come to standing on stage, looking out over an enraptured crowd and feeling them look back at you, completely in awe.
Where traditional music games reward perfection, RBVR encourages spontaneity. Freed from the limitations of beat matching you are empowered. From the moment you pick up your guitar and strap on the Rift something magical has happened – you step on stage and you have been transformed. You are now a rock god. You’re head banging with the crowd, matching stage moves with your bassist, dancing with your singer and, best of all, you sound amazing doing it. Your performance is the stuff of legend. You’re putting on a show the crowd won’t soon forget.

Soft Body
Soft Body is a meditative action game where you control two beautiful, gooey snakes at the same time. In the game, you paint the world with your body, and as you do so, the world changes around you revealing new obstacles and challenges. The action is tense, but the mood is contemplative and calm. It’s a blend of quick-restart action games like Super Meat Boy and the mind-melting coordination of top-down shooters like Ikaruga.
