GRAND BAND memorializes the groundbreaking Dutch composer’s life with a performance of his most famous work, the epic Canto Ostinato.

Grand Band performs Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato, the sprawling minimalist masterpiece for multiple pianos in a concert at (le) poisson rouge memorializing the composer’s recent death. The evening-length work is a complex tapestry of repetitive layers strung together in a flexible structure, ensuring that no two performances are alike– in the words of Ton van Asseldonk, his ‘compositions are not just single works, but rather a collection of an infinite number of compositions, all hidden in a single written code.’ With this performance of his most famous work, the six pianists of Grand Band pay homage to this creative genius who was at his best when writing for multiple pianos.

SIMEON ten HOLT was a Dutch composer who developed his own approach to minimalism, often using modular techniques to create flexible, organic structures that give performers a hand in crafting the form of each specific performance. These structural characteristics have led some to describe his music as ‘post-modernist’ and to emphasize its special place among (or alongside) works by other groundbreaking composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. ten Holt gravitated towards the piano, and often wrote for ensembles of multiple pianos, resulting in a wealth of repertoire for this increasingly popular instrumentation.Canto Ostinato, composed in 1976, was a turning-point for the composer, and considered an important event in Dutch musical history of the twentieth century. It was the subject of the documentary Over Canto and remains his most popular work. Simeon ten Holt died November 25, 2012 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, at the age of 89.

Grand Band (Vicky Chow, David Friend, Paul Kerekes, Blair McMillen, Lisa Moore, and Isabelle O’Connell): performing Simeon ten Holt’s “Canto Ostinato”

GRAND BAND is NYC’s New Music Piano Sextet. This unique ensemble has been described as ‘the Traveling Wilburys of the city’s new-music piano scene’ by the New York Times and a ‘supergroup of soloists’ (The Glass) and has garnered praise for delivering electrifying performances of new and contemporary music for six pianos. Making its debut at the Bang on a Can Marathon in a headlining performance of Steve Reich’s epic Six Pianos, the ensemble has been in increasing demand. Following a performance at (le) poisson rouge last summer, the New York Times declared that Grand Band consists of ‘six of the finest, busiest pianists active in New York’s contemporary-classical scene’ and that the group was a ‘rousing new ensemble.’
