Bearthoven brings their unique brand of investigative new music for piano, percussion, and bass to LPR on April 18th to kick off the release of their debut album, Trios (out on Cantaloupe Music, May 5th). Over three years in the making, the record celebrates a community built around performers who play new music and the composers who write for them.
For this release, Bearthoven will perform three highlighted works from Trios: Adrian Knight’s The Ringing World, Fjóla Evans Shoaling, and Brooks Frederickson’s Undertoad.
The night also includes the premiere of a newly commissioned work, American Dream, from Brooklyn’s timelessly lyrical and occasionally dystopian composer Scott Wollschleger.
The show begins with a solo set by Fjóla Evans performing her original music for solo cello and electronics. Based on her love of Icelandic folk-song and drones, the music explores looping white-noise, archival and field recordings to build twitching minimal soundscapes. She will be performing pieces inspired by her study of Icelandic Rímur, a type of intonement of skaldic poetry.

Table seating for all seated shows is reserved exclusively for ticket holders who purchase “Table Seating” tickets. By purchasing a “Table Seating” ticket you agree to also purchase a minimum of two food and/or beverage items per person. Table seating is first come, first seated. Please arrive early for the best choice of available seats. Seating begins when doors open. Tables are communal so you may be seated with other patrons. We do not take table reservations.
A standing room area is available by the bar for all guests who purchase “Standing Room” tickets. Food and beverage can be purchased at the bar but there is no minimum purchase required in this area.

Bearthoven [ \’bâr-toh-vən\ ] is a piano trio creating a new repertoire for a familiar instrumentation by commissioning works from leading young composers. Karl Larson (piano), Pat Swoboda (bass), and Matt Evans (percussion) have combined their individual voices and diverse musical backgrounds, coming together to create a versatile trio focused on frequent and innovative commissioning of up-and-coming composers. Bearthoven is rapidly building a diverse repertoire by challenging composers to apply their own voice to an instrumentation that, while common amongst jazz and pop idioms, is currently foreign in the contemporary classical world.
Formed in 2013, Bearthoven has quickly established themselves as a forerunner in the New York City contemporary music scene. Commissioning over 30 new works in their first six seasons, the trio has created its own diverse repertoire ranging from the driving, post-minimal voices of Ken Thomson, Brooks Frederickson, and Shelley Washington to the atmospheric and abstracted offerings of Sarah Hennies, Scott Wollschleger, and Anthony Vine. Bearthoven’s commitment to collaboration and innovation has garnered both critical and peer acclaim and has led to featured performances on notable series including the MATA Festival, the Bang On a Can Marathon, the Music/Sound Series at EMPAC, the Princeton Sound Kitchen, and the Ciclo de Conciertos de Música Contemporánea in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The group’s debut album Trios was released on Cantaloupe Music in May of 2017. Their second album, American Dream, features the works of Scott Wollschleger, and was released in February of 2019 on the same label.

Fjóla Evans is a Canadian/Icelandic composer and cellist. Her work draws inspiration from the behaviours of natural phenomena, and the droning lilt of Icelandic folk music. Commissions and performances have come from musicians such as the JACK Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow, and Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble. Her work has been featured on the MATA Festival, Ung Nordisk Musik, and the American Composers Orchestra’s SONiC Festival. As a performer, she has presented her own work at Cluster Festival of New Music, núna (now), and at Toronto’s the Music Gallery. She has performed with ensembles such as Hotel Elefant, singer/producer Lydia Ainsworth, and Bing & Ruth. Fjóla participated in residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and KulturKontakt Austria, among others. She has studied composition with Julia Wolfe, cello performance with Matt Haimovitz, and is currently pursuing a M.M.A. in composition at the Yale School of Music as a student of Martin Bresnick and Christopher Theofanidis.
