event description event description

Barnum’s Bird tells the incredible true story of Jenny Lind (Samina Aslam) and P.T. Barnum (Erik Bagger / Victor Khodadad). This one-act opera depicts this fearless artist and world-class showman, respectively, during their famous tour of America that changed the relationship between art and commerce forever.

New Camerata Opera is proud to debut Barnum’s Bird at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York, the city that was transformed by P.T. Barnum, and showcase the music of Grammy Award-winning composer Libby Larsen, with libretto by Larsen and Bridget Carpenter. Featuring local operatic artists, chamber orchestra, and authentic circus performers, this show brings opera under the “big top”!

Under the guidance of Angela Buccinni Butch (The Muse), Director of Circus and Choreography, the circus chorus will offer up their special talents in order to immerse the audience in Barnum’s spectacular world.

Directed by Jennifer Williams (Beth Morrison Projects, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Komische Oper Berlin) with music direction by Nell Flanders (Princeton Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Mannes Orchestra).

Ms. Williams notes, “Barnum’s world was a sensory overload, and this production reimagines how opera and theater can engage the senses.”

Barnum’s Bird is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

This production is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the city council.

New Camerata Opera was founded with the mission of building new audiences for the art form through engaging, exciting and educational productions.  The organization accomplishes this via three main initiatives: full-length operas presented at innovative and daring venues, newly arranged and adapted children’s operas, and originally commissioned short operatic films for presentation online. It is through these multi-faceted operations that NCO has successfully brought countless new opera lovers into the cultural fold. The organization has been hailed as “the future of opera”, and is one of the most consistently active and present opera companies in New York.
