Sangmin Lee is one of the most in-demand recorded live session drummers in South Korea. After a decade of session experience, Sangmin relocated to the states and studied at Berklee College of Music (B.M.) and New York University (M.M). The fresh and vibrant music scene in New York lured him to explore and expand his musicality by collaborating with artists such as Grammy-winning music producer Fran Cathcart, Casey Benjamin, Dave Pietro, Hiram Bullock, Leo Genovese and many others. Sangmin released his first solo album titled “Evolution” in 2010 as a music producer, composer, and a drummer. The great jazz fusion drummer Akira Jimbo claimed Sangmin’s style as “Hyper jazz rock hip hop techno mixture” – inventive and non-traditional.
Just like his album title, Sangmin has progressively pushed beyond his limit as a drummer and gained recognition as a jazz artist when he won his first award at International Jarasum jazz competition in 2008. Sangmin performed with Korean pop artists such as the all-time famous Rain, Park Junghyun, Lee Juck, Lee Sora, and many other renowned Korean musicians in various genres. New York’s jazz scene is Lee’s next new frontier as he leaves his fame and culture behind in Korea. His musical presence will be an everlasting footprint in Korea but his innovative musical talents will bring a breath of fresh air to New York City.
