Zoë Brecher (Sad13)

Zoë Brecher began playing drums at age 9 and immediately ran into two obstacles: She was female and left-handed. Even buying equipment with her father was a problem because the male-dominated field didn’t think she could possibly be serious. And teachers tried for two years to make her drum right-handed until a genius teacher named Ronnie said, duh, it would be easier to switch the kit than switch Zoë. Zoë studied music throughout her years at Trinity School in New York City and played – mostly jazz – in the school’s premier band. She did the same as an honors student at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Her first national tour was with Total Slacker. Her second, and her first formal appearance at SXSW, was with Oberhofer, who recently appeared in the movie, and performed the music for, “Table 19” with Anna Kendrick. Her third was with Sad13, the project of Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, with whom she’s set to play SWSX 2017. Zoë’s solo passion project is HUSHPUPPY. She lives in New York City.
