Anja Huwe
The iconic singer of XMAL DEUTSCHLAND, ANJA HUWE, has recently announced her return on stage following the release of an album on Sacred Bones.
Anja will be performing her debut solo album CODES (on Sacred Bones records) live on stage – along with a solid selection of timeless tracks of her pioneering postpunk band Xmal Deutschland classics, in modern interpretations – with a new line-up, set into light by her signature visual art.
“An extraterrestrial quality seemed to follow Xmal Deutschland. The band commanded an image you wouldn’t easily forget. Huwe led the group with an arsenal of avant garde poses and expressions worthy of a silent movie star. Not exactly art punks nor new wavers, the band played a moody and rhythmic style that would make them pioneers of a then-unnamed genre: goth.” – The Guardian
“An unexpected new chapter, a fierce statement of regret-less resilience, as shrewd as it is impassioned.” – ****** Record Collector**
“A welcome return of Anja Huwe’s unique creative voice.” – Electronic Sound
“A thrillingly messy post-punk racket” – Uncut
“Both projects honour post-punk tendencies through mesmeric spoken word, scratchy guitars and penetrative synths. In Early Singles (1981–1982) we see the rebirth of post-punk prodigy Xmal Deutschland and in Codes we see the very beginnings of what could be an intriguing new chapter for Huwe’s solo career.” – The Quietus
“Confirms their maverick status.” – ****** MOJO**
“Codes brings her musical career up to date, touching on several directions she might have explored if she’d kept making music during that time, while looking back on her life experiences.” – Allmusic
Anja Huwe, the iconic frontwoman of post-punk pioneers Xmal Deutschland, made her mark in music history with the band’s influential releases, including four albums on cult labels like 4AD. After stepping away from the spotlight to focus on a successful career in visual arts, Huwe made a triumphant return to music in early 2024 with her acclaimed solo album ‘CODES’, released alongside reissues of early Xmal Deutschland singles—both on Sacred Bones Records. Huwe’s comeback was heralded by the global press, with outlets like The Guardian, Rolling Stone, THE WIRE, and Galore dubbing it the “comeback of the year” and heaping praise on her latest work.
This wave of critical acclaim, combined with a groundswell of fan demand, has driven Huwe to bring CODES to the stage. She will perform her new material live, alongside modern reinterpretations of Xmal Deutschland classics, with a new band lineup (to be announced soon) and visual art designed by Huwe herself. Anja Huwe’s first confirmed performance will be at the Grauzone Festival in the Netherlands in February 2025 (info here), with additional shows in the UK and Europe to follow.
In conjunction with the news of the return to the stage, Huwe is releasing remixes by German band No More – well-known for their indie-classic “Suicide Commando” – of two early Xmal Deutschland singles. “Die Wolken“ transforms the track into a sleek, stripped-back electro anthem, seamlessly blending post-punk’s moody intensity with a sharper, dancefloor-ready edge. The track pulses with a minimalist groove, driving its hypnotic rhythm forward while retaining the dark, brooding undercurrent that defines its post-punk roots. “Schwarze Welt“ takes a completely different turn, embracing a moody trip-hop rhythm that envelops the track in a hypnotic, downtempo vibe. While the original’s raw punk energy is still present in the vocal delivery, it’s now interwoven with ethereal, atmospheric layers brought to life by shimmering synths. This reimagined version drifts between worlds, balancing the grit of its punk origins with a more dreamlike ambient quality.
Georgi
Georgi emerged from NYC’s underground electronic scene. Her sound interplays cold synths with pop hooks; creating a stark contrast between the two worlds. Produced by industrial legends Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, NIN) and Anthony Valcic (Front Line Assembly).
Georgi debuted her track “Shadows” which features a Depeche Mode interpretation signed off by Martin Gore himself.
“The track glints with serrated synths and iron‑lung percussion, sealing her crown as “The Girl in Synth,”” Postpunk.com
