Let A Frown Be Your Umbrella: Two evenings celebrating Kranky Records

LPR is proud to present two evenings with Kranky label artists LOSCIL, BENOIT PIOULARD, STEVE HAUSCHILDT & FORMA.

The first evening presents sonorous, Pacific Northwest ambient music with two of its most celebrated composers of slow-motion, beatific sounds: Loscil & Benoît Pioulard. Beyond the notions of passive ornamental embellishment, both performers are sculptors of sonic narrative from the colluvium of ambient music’s rawest materials.

The second night plays host to the evolving field improvisation and non-rock forms. Dismantling both the synthesizer central roles and showmanship in rock music for a larger lexicon of expressive frontiers, theirs is a more variegated and polychromatic realization of these electric instruments and their still undiscovered potential. This is a lissom flexing of the tools of psychedelic and kosmische music into applications wholly mutagenic and hybrid, circuitous and serpentine in their paths away from tradition.

Loscil

Loscil is the project of Vancouver based composer Scott Morgan. Morgan’s background in Vancouver’s independent music scene as a drummer and guitarist and his academic composition studies at Simon Fraser University culminated in the creation of Loscil in the late 1990’s. With Loscil, Morgan explores the marriage of electronic production and acoustic instrumentation to create “…stark landscapes that are evocative, earthly, anything but abstract, and so much more than merely ‘ambient’.” (The Quietus, UK).

Loscil has predominantly released music through Portland’s Kranky label including his 7th full length, 2014’s Sea Island. He has also worked with the esteemed Ghostly International, Italy’s Glacial Movements, Ireland’s Wist Rec, England’s Gizeh, Canada’s JAZ Records and his own Frond imprint for special releases.

Loscil has produced numerous remixes and collaborated with other musicians such as bvdub, Rachel Grimes, Christina Vantzou, Destroyer and Kelly Wyse. He has composed for film and appeared in bold documentaries such as The Corporation, Scared Sacred and Damnation. He has created bespoke music for dance and video games such as Hundreds and Osmos and has performed worldwide including at renowned festivals such as Mutek, Decibel and Big Ears.

Since a young age, Thomas Meluch has been fascinated by natural sounds and the textures of decay. He began playing piano before his feet could reach the pedals, and for more than a decade has sought to create a unique sonic environment by combining remnants of pop song structures with the lushness and unpredictability of field recordings. A veteran drummer of a half dozen bands and an avid collector of instruments and analog devices, Meluch relies on guitar and voice as the bases for his work as Benoît Pioulard.
