Nominee for the 2013 BRITs Critics’ Choice Award and ranked highly in fourth place for the BBC Sound of 2013, Laura Mvula announces the release of new single, ‘That’s Alright’ on 5th May 2013 through RCA Victor (Sony).
‘That’s Alright‘, is a sassy stomping hymn to empowerment, infused with big crescendo of brass which The Guardian proclaim, “could well become a summer anthem”.
The new single is taken from Laura’s debut album ‘Sing to the Moon’, which when debuted in the top 10 official UK album chart when released in March. Laura has had an incredible year – having just finished touring with Jessie Ware and making her mark at SXSW, she’s due to start her own sold-out regional tour in April and support Paloma Faith in June. Not bad for a former supply teacher from Birmingham.
Since announcing the release of her debut EP ‘She’ back in November last year, Laura has been picking up critical acclaim and support from some of the biggest tastemakers out there. Laura’s unique sound has wowed critics, helping to make her one of names on everyone’s lips in 2013 and has lead to her being described as “The voice of 2013” by The Evening Standard and her album hailed as “a masterpiece” by The Sunday Times Culture.
The classically trained, singer-songwriter’s music fuses orchestral soul with velvety harmonies and emotional vocals giving nods to Nina Simone, George Gershwin and Björk amongst others. A graduate from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition, the 26-year-old is a unique collision of her Caribbean background and classical music.
As one of the most exciting new musical talents to come out of the UK, this young lady deserves every bit of attention that she gets. As Clash magazine say, “Beautiful in voice and soul, lift your eyes skyward and watch this girl soar”.

Twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother and musical compadre Anita Bias are KING.
In 2011 KING independently released their first EP to much acclaim; title track “The Story,” (featured on GLAMOUR‘s Top Songs Playlist), “Supernatural” (NPR’s Song of the Day) and “Hey” (featured in 2014 motion picture ‘About Last Night’) make up the 3-piece introduction to their carefully crafted future-soul sound. Hours after the release, their EP had traveled far to music lovers and tastemakers alike, trending on Twitter and making new fans of many. KING have since been preparing their debut full-length album due for release Fall 2014 and are excited to invite their listeners further into their sound. The album will also include the ethereal romance “In The Meantime” (Top 2013 Pick by NPR, The Guardian UK, and Buzzbands LA).
KING’s smooth vibe, intricate production and harmonic style evolved beautifully in their home studio, a product solely of the three women. Paris produces KING’s songs, while Amber and Anita are the primary singers. The three work together on songwriting and vocal arrangements to create own their very uniquely soulful sound.
Citing influences ranging from a myriad of genres, KING’s eclectic sound is both relatable yet not simply defined. Though their cross-genre sound plays with the boundaries of their varied influences, maintained throughout each of their compositions is the common thread of a certain soulful authenticity. From Ebony Magazine: “KING bypasses the impulse to categorize musicians into a singular box by falling somewhere in the utopian realm of nostalgic R&B, futuristic soul and folksy-bluesy jazz.” Add to that their electronic, new wave and downtempo tastes, their penchant for storytelling and their exceptional ability to blend 3 voices and perspectives- and the result is a melting pot of music that harks to an earlier time of unbridled exploration and creativity.
