Edom Edom

Leader Eyal Maoz was born in Israel and started to explore music at a very early age. He led the celebrated Lemon Juice Quartet and performed regularly at the Red Sea International Jazz Festival. Maoz’s notorious one-of-a-kind approach to composition, transposed for this seasoned ensemble, brings Edom into the much-too-rarely visited junction of instrumental pop, jazz and avant-garde. The group includes “downtown music” veterans such as: Brian Marsella (Cyro Baptista, Matisyahu) – a master of the Hammond B3 organ and extreme synthesizers. Shanir Blumenkranz, who is featured on over twenty-five releases in the Tzadik catalog, and has participated in many of John Zorn’s own recordings.  And drummer Yuval Lion of Pink Noise and Pharoah’s Daughter! Adding the blistering guitar work of Eyal Maoz, an astonishing composer and guitarist, and a guest guitarist in John Zorn’s Cobra, the sonic capabilities of Edom reach radical high points.

Edom’s newest album, Hope and Destruction is a mythically shaped apocalyptic tale pierced with bursts of sunlight; it deals with either themes or questions that arise from the study of the Jewish spirituality and history. It emotes the stories of pain and strength, devastation and joy, loneliness and celebration. Where Avant-Garde meets New Wave, and echoes of Joy Division are counter posed with Zorn’s Electric Masada, begins the rocking odyssey of Edom.
