Is the heart of WORD*ROCK*SWORD: A Festival Exploration of Women’s Lives VIII ( wordrocksword.com ) an 8 Day community festival founded in 2011 by Toshi Reagon ( toshireagon.com ) . This musical celebration has become a dedicated meeting ground for audience members and musicians alike. It is held together by a band features Allison Miller– drums, Christelle Durandy– percussion, Alex Nolan– guitar, Ganessa James-bass, Maya Kronfeld– keys, Lyris Hung and Juliette Jones– Violin. Nona Hendryx, Tamar-kali, Joan As Police Woman, and Morley are the root artist that everything else circulates around. It is 3 hours of a continuous congregational voice. Always amazing, Always full of surprise, Always just what you needed.

WORD*ROCK*SWORD: A Festival Exploration of Women’s Lives VIII is made up of several community events or actions created by people who have something they want to share with their community. It is home grown artist made. We have collaborated with all kinds of practitioners, artist and venues throughout NYC. We carve out 8 days in September. The focus on Women came as an action answer to the 2010 midterm elections candidates attacks on women’s rights and women’s bodies. After that election and continuing to this day there is a strong focus to criminalize women’s bodies. The attacks on all self identified Women sits side by side with the attacks on the LGBTQI community, attacks on Children, Race based violence and murder, the outrageous violence against people trying to find a home in the US at our borders and the disregard for the planet. WRS creates congregation using what the community has to offer to move against and end the many challenges we as living breathing beings face today.

We are extremely honored to celebrate 8 years with Le Poisson Rouge this year.

Word*Rock*& Sword: A Musical Celebration of Women’s Lives VIII

WRSVIII is an 8 day community festival founded and curated by Toshi Reagon. It takes place in venues in NYC. Anything goes, music venues, clubs, community centers, churches, parks, yoga studios, bars, museums and sometimes Toshi’s house. Each place a sanctuary to be in conversation with each other.

Toshi Reagon started the festival with the intention of, “responding creatively, showing our lives, our work, our activism and our talent. We struggle in a political climate that still tolerates and actively encourages systemic discrimination against women–from the workplace to the doctor’s office. We witness Congressional attacks on funding for Planned Parenthood; the harassment and murder of abortion providers; the denial of access to affordable health care; the constant vulnerability of women and girls to violence and sexual abuse; the daily struggle of women to hold families together in our ailing economy. We will come together to share our gifts and focus our intentions for the 21 Century.”

The festival’s flagship event is the capstone concert on September 22, 2018 at Le Poisson Rouge. Over 20 musicians and artists will come together to share their gifts and celebrate women’s lives. Artists confirmed to perform include Reagon herself, Morley, Tamar-kali, Be Steadwell, Joan As Police Woman and many more.
