Chop & Quench (the Fela! Band)

CHOP AND QUENCH, “The Fela! Band”, is comprised of members of the cast and band of FELA! the musical. Individually, the musicians are some of the finest in New York, having performed with The Roots, India Arie, Elvis Costello, and many others. Lead singer Sahr Ngaujah was nominated for a TONY Award for his performance in the Broadway show and has been featured on film and television. As a unit, the band has gotten to accompany performers such as Beyonce, Femi Kuti, and Angelique Kidjo. Known for their straightforward performances of classic Fela Kuti compositions, they have branched out, bringing their own original music to the stage. After performing around the world, they recently performed at the Sundance Film Festival in conjunction with the premier of Alex Gibney’s film “Finding Fela”. They are now back home in New York preparing new material to take into the studio for their first recording since the Fela! Broadway cast recording, and looking forward to starting a weekly Monday night residency at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.

Debo Band

Debo Band is a 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Since their inception in 2006, the band has won raves for their groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music (think Ethiopiques), which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles, alongside American soul and funk rhythms, and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands. Debo have toured Ethiopia twice, appearing at both the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa and Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar, the largest music festival in East Africa. In North America, they’ve shared stages with Gogol Bordello, Amadou & Mariam, Antibalas, The Family Stone, and Ethiopian great Tilahun Gessesse. Recent and upcoming performances include the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Bumbershoot, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, The Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, South by Southwest, globalFEST 2012, Joe’s Pub, International Festival of Arts & Ideas, and Montana Folk Festival. Their self-titled debut for Sub Pop / Next Ambiance was produced by Thomas “Tommy T” Gobena of Gogol Bordello and features album art by critically-renowned painter Julie Mehretu. It was recorded at Machines with Magnets (Battles, Deer Tick) and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe LaPorta at The Lodge.

Questlove

?uestlove is the unmistakable heartbeat of The Roots, Philadelphia’s most influential hip-hop band. Beyond that, this Grammy award-winning musician’s undisputable reputation has landed him musical directing positions with everyone from D’Angelo to Eminem to Jay-Z. He boasts production credits for Al Green, Erykah Badu, Joss Stone, Justin Timberlake and D’Angelo, among many others. His uncanny ear for picking the perfect song for the perfect moment landed him the position of musical director of The Dave Chapelle Show. His beloved Roots crew serves as house band for the all-newTonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. And now, ?uestlove is an author. His memoir, “Mo Meta Blues” hit bookshelves in June 2013 with his follow-up publication “Soul Train: The Music, Dance and Style of a Generation” debuting in October 2013.

?uestlove’s insatiable love of music has led him on a worldwide crate-digging journey. He has amassed a vinyl collection of more than 100,000 records that are shelved in a floor to ceiling, climate controlled library room in his personal studio. What to do with all those records? DJ, of course. ?uestlove has rocked parties to sold out crowds worldwide. With such a diverse collection, he is able to deliver an eclectic variety of sets. Whether it’s hip-hop, house, 80’s, rare grooves or a mix of everything in between, he commands people to the dance floor to get loose and get down. Previous DJ appearances include Direct TV Super Bowl Party, Nike Grammy Awards Event, Target Winter X Games Aspen, Fashion Week in NYC and Los Angeles, NBA All-Star Parties, Sundance Film Festival After parties, worldwide Red Bull Music Academy events, club and festival gigs all over America, Europe, South Africa, Australia and Japan and a residency at Williamsburg Brooklyn Bowl, as well as Las Vegas MGM Grand Ling Ling Room in Hakkasan. And oh, he’s also Justin Tmberlake’s go-to DJ for everything from his wedding reception to his MySpace Launch events.

?uestlove is the modern day mayor of soul music. No matter what the style, when ?uestlove gets behind the decks, people dance until the lights come on. And even then, they don’t want to go home.
