Monolord
A psych-blasted sludge-metal trio based in the traditionally black metal-oriented city of Gothenburg, Swedish doom rock unit Monolord was founded in 2013 around the talents of Thomas V Jäger (vocals, guitars), Esben Willems (drums), and Mika Häkki (bass). The band’s 2014 debut LP, Empress Rising, was released via Riding Easy Records, drew praise from a host of online zines, and quickly rose to the top of Bandcamp’s doom charts. A sophomore effort, Vaenir, arrived in 2015, and was followed by a heavy bout of touring both at home and abroad. In 2017, the band dropped their third studio long-player, Rust, again via Riding Easy. The following year saw the power trio ink a deal with Relapse Records. No Comfort, their fourth studio effort and first outing for the label, arrived in September 2019.
Firebreather
There’s no escaping the fact that Sweden is an incomparable breeding ground for some of the heaviest and most crushing metal bands. One such band is Gothenburg trio FIREBREATHER, who’ve released their self-titled debut album on Suicide Records, October 13th 2017. Relatively new to the fold having formed in the spring of 2016 from the ashes of underground doom heavyweights Galvano, FIREBREATHER is a devastatingly weighty statement of intent. Taking in four tracks that swallow time behind tooth shattering riffs from guitarist/vocalist Mattias Nööjd and crunching rhythms via bassist Kyle Pitcher and drummer Axel Wittbeck, FIREBREATHER are a jaw-breaking triptych of sludge and doom rock.
Castle Rat
Castle Rat is an interdimensional plague metal band on a mission to expand and defend ‘The Realm’ from their arch nemesis the Rat Reaper. The band is led by the Rat Queen on guitar and vocals, and features The Count on lead guitar, the Plague Doctor on bass, and The Druid on drums. For fans of 70s inspired heavy metal riffage, chainmail, swords, potions, battles and bloodshed.
