Winner of the 2015 Thelonious Monk Competition, vocalist Jazzmeia Horn has a name that speaks for itself capturing her very essence. With an assured maturity and vocal confidence far beyond her years, the young singer arrives with her debut recording on Concord’s Prestige label, A Social Call, an album that reveals a talent ready to take her place alongside the best headlining jazz vocalists of today. A collection of standards, hard bop anthems, spirituals, and R&B nuggets, A Social Call is a reflection on the times. Jazzmeia says it’s “a call to social responsibility, to know your role in your community.” Great story-telling, an inspired message, fluid vocals, scat-singing, and spirited group performances – A Social Call features all one would hope to hear from a veteran vocalist of longstanding reputation. As such, the album serves as a clarion call, proudly announcing the arrival of a young, confident musical talent with a bright future ahead of her, blessed with a name that carries its own destiny.
