The Writers Studio celebrates the release of the 2013 Pushcart Prize XXXVII, Best of the Small Presses, with readings by poets Timothy Liu and Patricia Smith and fiction writers Joshua Cohen, Jess Row and Deb Olin Unferth. Introduction by editor and founder Bill Henderson.

Table seating for all seated shows is reserved exclusively for ticket holders who purchase “Table Seating” tickets. Table Seating is first come, first seated. Please arrive early for the best choice of available seats. Seating begins when doors open. Tables are communal so you may be seated with other patrons. We do not take table reservations.
 
A standing room area is available by the bar for all guests who purchase “Standing Room” tickets. Food and beverage can be purchased at the bar.

the 2012 Pushcart Prize Reading

Joshua Cohen

Joshua Cohen was born in Atlantic City, NJ, in 1980. He is the author of three novels, Witz, A Heaven of Others, and Cadenza for the Schneidermann Violin Concerto, and a collection of short fiction, Four New Messages. He is currently at work on a nonfiction book, Attention! A (Short) History, to appear in 2013. Cohen lives in New York City.

Timothy Liu

Timothy Liu is the author of eight books of poems, most recently Bending the Mind Around the Dream’s Blown Fuse. Translated into ten languages, Liu’s journals and papers are archived in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library. Liu is a Professor of English at William Paterson University and lives with his husband in Manhattan.

Jess Row

Jess Row is the author of The Train to Lo Wu and Nobody Ever Gets Lost, and won Pushcart Prizes in 2002 and 2011. He’s at work on a novel about race and plastic surgery.

Patricia Smith

Patricia Smith is the author of six books of poetry, including Blood Dazzler, chronicling the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, which was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award, and one of NPR’s top five books of 2008; and Teahouse of the Almighty, a National Poetry Series selection. Her latest is Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah. Her work has appeared in Poetry, The Paris Review, TriQuarterly, Tin House and both Best American Poetry 2011 and Best American Essays 2011. She is also the author of Africans In America, the companion book to the groundbreaking PBS series, the children’s book Janna and the Kings and editor of the crime fiction anthology Staten Island Noir. She is a 2012 fellow at both the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo, a two-time Pushcart Prize winner and a four-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam, the most successful poet in the competition’s history. She is a professor at the City University of New York/College of Staten Island, and is on the faculty of both Cave Canem and the low-residency MFA program at Sierra Nevada College.

Deb Olin Unferth

Deb Olin Unferth is the author of the memoir Revolution, finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; the story collection Minor Robberies; and the novel Vacation, winner of the Cabell First Novel Award. Her work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, and elsewhere.
