Think: American Idol for classical composers.

The Ear was designed to create some heat around mainstream classical composition (an alternative to “new music”). Their mission: to provoke lots of composers to write lots of short pieces that lots of people will want to hear lots of times. Here’s how it works. A handful of short pieces will be played, and after each one, the audience answers a single question: Do you want to hear it again? If half vote “yes”, the piece wins prize money and moves forward. At the end of the evening, we hear the yeses again and vote on a winner.

The Ear has dispensed with a lot of annoying concert etiquette. Discuss your reactions with each other, heckle the host, and cheer (or boo) whenever you want, including during a piece. They trust you. And they want you to engage and have a great time – not just observe silently from your chair.

At The Ear’s last event, the audience encored 7 out of 9 pieces. And they were deep, serious pieces, not fluff. The audience, as we know, doesn’t want fluff. They want the real thing. You want the real thing.

Join The Ear in this growing movement to reboot mainstream classical composition.
