Since moving to New York in 2004, Corey King has focused on being adaptable in many musical environments without sacrificing his musical integrity. He is highly respected by his peers for his creativity and versatility, which are heavily influenced by numerous styles within the music realm. King is a graduate of the Grammy Award-winning High School For The Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), which has produced an immense amount of talent over the years, such as Robert Glasper and Beyonce Knowles. After moving to New York, King received a scholarship to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, majoring in Jazz Performance.
Since Corey has been in New York, he has had the opportunities to perform/record with notable artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Glen Hansard, Chris Dave, Stokley of Mint Condition, Mos Def, Gil-Scott Heron, Takuya Kuroda, D.J. After co-commissioning Michael Gordon’s evening-length percussion sextet Timber, they gave the work’s United States premiere in October 2011 and subsequently toured the work throughout North America. Mantra Percussion also gave the New York premiere of Timber at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival in December 2012. Additionally, through their 3Nights series, Mantra Percussion has commissioned Ted Hearne, Daniel Wohl, Tristan Perich, Paula Matthusen, Eric Wubbels, Alex Mincek, Sam Pluta, Zs, Xiu Xiu, and Ian Williams.
Mantra Percussion has been hailed by The New York Times as “finely polished…a fresh source of energy” and by TimeOut New York as “forward thinking”; the group was praised by The New Yorker and TimeOut New York for presenting one of the ten best classical performances of 2012.
They recorded one of Time Out New York’s Ten Best Classical Albums of 2011, Aaron Siegel’s glockenspiel octet (with organ), Science Is Only A Sometimes Friend on Lockstep Records, and Michael Fiday’s Hands On! on Innova Records that the UK’s Gramophone magazine praised as “a disc to treasure…”
