Joan As Police Woman
Joan as Police Woman (Joan Wasser) is a world-renowned recording artist, songwriter, performer, producer and multi-talented instrumentalist. First trained as a classical violinist, Wasser was influenced by the music of Jimi Hendrix, Siouxie and the Banshees, Nina Simone, and Black Flag. She went on to perform in a number of alternative rock bands including The Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls, and Helium. Throughout the early 2000s, Wasser went on to collaborate with artists including John Cale, Lou Reed, David Sylvian, Antony & The Johnsons, and Rufus Wainwright, several of whom went on to be featured on her own records. In 2002, Wasser formed Joan as Police Woman, and her debut album Real Life was released in 2006 to great acclaim. Pitchfork celebrates her songs that “remind us of a time when pop tunes wound up in jazz clubs without losing anything in translation.” She recently returned from an extensive European tour for her 6th studio album, Let it Be You, a collaboration with Benjamin Lazar Davis. Tonight Wasser will play songs from her upcoming unreleased album and is joined by Parker Kindred, Ben Perowsky, Oren Bloedow, Jared Samuel and Thomas Bartlett.
“Soulful adventurism – a voice so wondrous and moving it makes everyone else’s seem ordinary and mundane” THE GUARDIAN
“Ravishing and lovelorn” MOJO
“The coolest woman in pop” THE TIMES
Anni Rossi is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer based in Brooklyn. She is classically trained and studied composition at Cal Arts. Her repertoire includes strumming her one-of-a-kind electric viola-guitar (crafted out of a treebranch by the mighty Thor Harris of Swans), composing music for Berlin Sun Theater at The Whitney Museum, euphonious pop harmonizing, dirty Aaliyah-inspired RnB jams and working with producer Steve Albini.
After parting ways with label 4AD in 2011, she found a wider frame of expression. Rossi is emerging from a period of playfully exploring several tangents of work woven by her creative instincts and raw responses to being human. She is currently working on a full length with co-producer Bobb Bruno (Best Coast) and just finished mixing an EP that she tracked at The Magic Shop in its final days. Rossi’s forthcoming mixtape entitled “HER” will be released on April 1st.
Ora Cogan’s versatile, haunted voice opens up a mystical reality; hallowed, forlorn and full of promise. She combines the intricate guitar picking of Americana with grunge and psychedelic dreamscapes, drawing comparisons to 70’s folk legend Karen Dalton. As a performer Ora has shared the stage with the likes of Grouper & Hope Sandoval while touring extensively in North America, Europe and the UK.
Ora’s new album, Shadowland, was released on Hidden City Records and Beacon Sound in 2016. A co-production with Trish Klein from The Be Good Tanyas, Shadowland sees Ora’s stunning voice set in an intriguing realm of electric guitar, vintage keyboards, and hypnotic drums.
Ora became a part of Vancouver’s eclectic music community at 19, collaborating with a multitude of artists who participated in trend setting improvisation events Fake Jazz Wednesdays & Her Jazz Noise Collective. Cogan has released six full-length recordings to date and has played numerous festivals including Vancouver Folk Festival, The Festival of Endless Gratitude in Copenhagen and Torstraßen Festival in Berlin. She will be on tour throughout 2017 with her band.
