At Le Poisson Rouge, we host a wide range of artists and events, both emerging and established. As genres offerings go, we like to think of ourselves as an equal-opportunity venue, with the potential for discovering all kinds of music. Sometimes it’s difficult to sift through the many shows we have to find something new, so we thought we’d help our friends a little with descriptions, roundups, free mp3s, mixes, and more. Herewith, a collection of upcoming shows at LPR one might broadly describe as “indie”:
HOLY FUCK

Canadian electronic band Holy Fuck will be at LPR this Friday in support of their latest LP, Latin. Known for performing without the use of laptops or other conventional electronic instruments, their sets often feature tables of old analog equipment, effects pedals, and even a 35mm film synchronizer, in addition to live percussion and bass. Says The New Yorker: “Yes, that’s its real name, and the profane exclamation may be the only sensible response to this Toronto-based quartet’s extraordinary live show, a heady take on Krautrock and electronica.”

NATHANIEL RATELIFF

Singer-Songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff grew up playing music with his family- first learning drums at age 7, and then the guitar at age 13. After moving from small-town Missouri to Denver, Rateliff began playing local shows and recording songs on an 8-track. He later teamed up with producer Brian Deck (Califone, Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse) to record his latest album, In Memory Loss.

Ambling guitar riffs and light touches of piano sound like aimless strolls through town; Rateliff’s rich voice and his bandmates’ textured harmonies sound like long and comfortable conversations, and the songwriter’s occasional raw vocal rattle sounds like those sweet moments of when new lovers are bold to share hard truths—family secrets, old friends, regrets—and ask big questions.

STARS

Along with Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Apostle of Hustle, Stars were one of the first bands to be released by Canadian label Arts & Crafts. Prior to the June 22nd release of their 5th studio album The Five Ghosts the band will be playing the album in its entirety every night on their pre-release tour, and allowing fans to vote on what non-Ghosts tracks they’d like to hear in the encore. Stars’ June 5th show at LPR is sold out, but you can still head over to Stereogum to stream “Fixed,” the upbeat, synth-driven first single off of the album.

JAY BRANNAN

The Texas-born, New York-based singer-songwriter and actor Jay Brannan will be at LPR on June 10th. While often compared to Rufus Wainwright, he sees himself as “more like Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell — I go for the sound of the angry, sad woman.” Check out his video for “Housewife” below.
