Silencio – A Tribute to the Works of David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti

Since their spontaneous arrival in December of 2011, Silencio has developed and maintained an uber buzz-worthy status offering recognition across the world. The band is best known for its meticulously crafted live performances of David Lynch’s film soundtracks, but has moved forward by recording two albums worth of prolific & stylized soundtrack-inspired original material.

Silencio’s first album “Music Inspired by the Works of David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti” (2012) was a self-produced, self-released effort intended to be nothing more than a demo recording. The album’s eerie vibe and simple but slick production made it an unexpected surprise to both Lynch fans and audiophiles alike. The album’s enthusiastic reception led to the official formation of Silencio as a live act. Almost immediately, the band jumped into live performance mode with sellout shows at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge, Philadelphia’s World Cafè Live and Cleveland’s Beachland Ballroom supporting alt-rock luminaries The Afghan Whigs (on the latter). This trend continued to gather steam both on and off stage as the band would return to these major markets with audiences wanting more. The press would also catch the buzz as Silencio would receive mentions in major publications like Rolling Stone, All About Jazz, Downbeat and The Huffington Post.

After almost two years of intermittent touring and a performance at the 2013 SXSW Music Conference, the band began writing songs for a follow up to their debut album. Shortly thereafter, demos of the new material were tracked in preparation for the recording of the new album She’s Bad in early 2014. A return performance to Le Poisson Rouge that spring caught the eyes and ears of Nell Mulderry (President of NYC based BossSounds) who decided to work with the band (along with The Orchard) on the release and distribution of She’s Bad.

A healthy total of 22 songs were recorded during the sessions, of which 18 made the final cut. Just before the basic tracking sessions had begun, a chance communication between Silencio bandleader Kirk Salopek and (Chris Isaak) guitarist Hershel Yatovitz initiated a situation in which Yatovitz would take lead mix and production roles on the album’s title track. The result ended in a boozy, smoky number primed for loungy sex appeal. The album digresses from there covering a wide range of flavor and style. Songs like “The Creeper” and “Surf Creep” sounds as if Henry Mancini was put to the task of composing an updated theme for The Munsters. “Low Down Dirge” is addled with ominous electronic drum enhancement that sounds like Trent Reznor meeting Link Wray in a dark alley. The album’s second single “Take Me With You” evokes flashbacks to the moody night drive scene in Wild At Heart when Chris Isaak’s mega hit “Wicked Game” was introduced to the world. “Only With You” conjures a Lady In The Radiator vibe that showcases just how multi-dimensional and surreal She’s Bad can be. The album was recorded and mixed largely in Pittsburgh, PA. but had a handful of tracks mixed and partially recorded with Rick Nelson (Afghan Whigs) in New Orleans at Marigny Studios.

Despite the fact that their live shows are essentially paid in tribute, Silencio is a paradox in their own right. Their original music offers so much more than just an interpretation of David Lynch’s film soundtracks. Instead, they explode and enhance the compositional aspects of the many disparate, rootsy musical styles he chooses that make his films so unique. These quirky, familiar and sometimes scary collections of music capture the dark side of small town life in America just much as the dream of Hollywood stardom. This all comes full circle on a Silencio album. Their musical offerings capture the core essence and atmosphere in many of the scenes we all know from a classic American filmmaker (like David Lynch). But they also play just as well into all the scenes, dreams and nightmares that reside within us.

She’s Bad releases and distributes worldwide through BossSounds and The Orchard beginning June 16th 2015.
