Le Poisson Rouge hosts the New York debut of one of the living legends of contemporary African Music: Paulo Flores.
This is a general admission, standing event.
Alma de Angola: An Evening with Paulo Flores
Paulo Flores is an Angolan singer-songwriter who was one of the architects of his country’s immensely popular kizomba dance music back in the 1980s. Today he devotes his energy to keeping the flame of semba music burring bright in the 21st century.
Semba is the elegant, earthy, African ancestor of Brazilian samba — and the root of today’s kuduro and kizomba dance crazes. Flores’ poetic compositions focus on everything from love and life to history and politics, tapping into the deep roots that make semba the repository of decades of Angolan wit and wisdom.
In a country where the deep wounds of civil war are plastered over with new oil money and a beachfront building boom. Paulo Flores keeps a nation’s conscience and memory alive, and gives voice to the soul of a nation.

Geko Jones (DJ)
Renowned by top DJ’s and producers of the digital cumbia scene in Latin America and European bass-pundits alike, Geko Jones is one of the select few DJ’s pushing forward the Latin agenda in a world wide tropical bass scene. A founding member of both the New York Tropical and Que Bajo?! party franchises in New York, and a partner and co-owner of the Dutty Artz record label with producer Matt Shadetek and DJ /Rupture, his mixes span the tropical hemispheres and collage together hours of globally sonic dance- floor mayhem. His DJ sets incorporate heavy afro-latin percussion mashed up against the hard synth lines and global breaks.
