What does classical mean in a contemporary context? Is it a particular instrumentation that only includes the stings, woodwinds, and brass that were available to composers like Bach and Mozart? Could electric guitars ever be considered classical? These are questions that classically trained composer William Brittelle asks with his new album Television Landscape. The eleven songs play like one long piece divided into movements made up of a collage of influences including the Beach Boys’ groundbreaking pop album Pet Sounds along with the powerfully dissonant jazz composer Charles Mingus and impressionist classical composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
