He may still be in his twenties, but Trinidadian trumpeter and bandleader Etienne Charles is already making quite a mark. He comes to LPR on Tuesday, July 23 for a concert celebrating his latest effort, Creole Soul. The New York Times, which has previously hailed Charles as one of the jazz world’s “more ambitious soloists and composers,” is currently streaming the album on its Press Play page.

As it’s title suggests, Creole Soul draws from a range of Caribbean and American roots music. In addition to Charles’ excellent original compositions, it features his take on Thelonious Monk’s “Green Chimneys,” Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” rocksteady classic “You Don’t Love Me (No No No)” and “Memories,” a ballad popularized by Trinidadian calypso icon Mighty Sparrow.

Give Creole Soul a listen and make plans to come see him at LPR on the 23rd!
