Manhattan Camerata: Tango Fado Project

Manhattan Camerata official site | Manhattan Camerata on Facebook

The Manhattan Camerata is a unique chamber orchestra that seamlessly weaves together world and classical music elements spanning the globe and the ages. The Manhattan Camerata is the first chamber Ensemble/Orchestra to perform Transclassical Music: expanding classical music, incorporating elements from different cultures around the world in a variety of styles, genres, and exotic instruments.

One of the goals of the Manhattan Camerata is to bridge several cultures and musical traditions showing their connections and similarities rather than their differences, making the listener travel to different musical worlds through carefully crafted programs that cohesively integrate either fado and tango, or Indian music and flamenco, medieval organum and the Beatles, and beyond. In our concerts we combine the western classical chamber orchestra with several world instruments (Portuguese guitar, bandoneón, sitar, darbuka, etc.) often in new compositions and arrangements by its founders Lucía Caruso and Pedro H. da Silva.

The eclectic and inclusive nature of the Camerata can be appreciated in the diverse backgrounds of the musicians who created it: artistic director Lucía Caruso – composer and pianist from Argentina, and music director Pedro H. da Silva – composer and guitarist from Portugal. Pedro is a member of the composition faculty at the New York University, and a multi-instrumentalist (Classical and Portuguese guitars, sitar, oud, bouzouki, mandolin, among others), imparting the Manhattan Camerata with an international and multi-cultural artistic approach.

The Manhattan Camerata has performed at the Versailles Palace in France, at Magazzini del Sale in Venice, Italy, at the Monserrate Palace in Portugal, and at many major venues in the New York City area, including: Vanderbilt Hall at New York’s Grand Central Station, Le Poisson Rouge, Joe’s Pub, Frederick Loewe Theatre at New York University, Blessed Sacrament Church, the Argentine Consulate, the Portuguese Consulate in Newark, and on the famous Portuguese tall ship “Sagres”.
