The evening’s main featured artist is the Grammy award-winning percussionist, vocalist and composer, the founder of the avant-guard folk ensemble Armenian Navy Band, ArtoTuncboyacian, who has collaborated numerous times with world famous artists like Paul Motian, Chet Baker, Joe Zawinul, System of a Down, and many others beloved for jazz audiences all over the world.
While Arto will present a one-hour solo show, he will also collaborate with young emerging Armenian jazz artists, Noah Garabedian, Michael Sarian, and Tatev and Lucy Yeghiazarians, who are already making a mark in the jazz world. They have collaborated with famous artists, such as Brad Mehldau, Ravi Coltrane, Josh Roseman, Ralf Alessi and others, performing in the best jazz venues around the world. Bringing two generations of Armenian jazz artists together to improvise and perform each other’s works, they will present a show never before done in New York – an Armenian Jazz Evening.

Table seating for all seated shows is reserved exclusively for ticket holders who purchase “Table Seating” tickets. By purchasing a “Table Seating” ticket you agree to also purchase a minimum of two food and/or beverage items per person. Table seating is first come, first seated. Please arrive early for the best choice of available seats. Seating begins when doors open. Tables are communal so you may be seated with other patrons. We do not take table reservations.
A standing room area is available by the bar for all guests who purchase “Standing Room” tickets. Food and beverage can be purchased at the bar but there is no minimum purchase required in this area.
All tickets sales are final. No refund or credits.
Arto Tunçboyaciyan, percussionist and singer, was born in Turkey in 1957 of Armenian descent of the Anatolian root.
One of his greatest influences of music and life was his brother Onno, musician himself, who encouraged Arto to develop his character not just as a brother but as a friend and as a musician.
At the age of 11, he began his career playing and recording traditional music with his brother establishing himself as a professional musician throughout Turkey and Europe.
Music is a fundamental element of his life, by which he tries to communicate his great values: love, respect and truth.
In 1981 Arto moved to United States to explore new creative influences and to add a new dimension to his own vision of life. Since then, he has given solo concerts of his own music throughout the world.
In 1985 two solo albums were released on the Dutch Keytone Label: Virginland and Main Root.
He started a meaningful cooperation with the Armenian oud player Ara Dinkjian, with whom he recorded in duo Tears of Dignity and Onno for the Greek label Libra Music. Two wonderful albums in which music “has the sound of my life” using Arto’s words. Onno is the homage to his brother Onno Ohannes Tunçboyaciyan suddenly disappeared in 1996, in which compositions are a clear expression of Arto’s memories of his brother when he was alive and after his death.
With Ara Dinkjian he founded as well the group NIGHT ARK and recorded the following albums: Picture, Moments, Wonderland and Petals On Your Path (released in February 2000 by Universal Music).
In 1998 he participated at the Italian project TRIBOH, conceived and co-led with the vocalist Maria Pia De Vito and the pianoplayer Rita Marcotulli, recording the CD Triboh for the Italian label Polosud.
He is a member of the group WALKING FISH together with Matthew Garrison, Jim Beard, Gene Lake and Bob Malach.
Recently his latest album with Paul Winter Every Day is a New Life has been released by Living Music.
Currently he is working with Armenian musicians with whom he founded his new group THE ARMENIAN NAVY BAND, a small orchestra rooted in Armenian and Anatolian traditional music with the inspiration and sound of today. The project was born in 1998 after the meeting in Yerevan with young Armenian musicians coming from different music experiences (ethnic and contemporary Armenian music). Since then the idea to create a group which could represent the sound of Armenia of today became concrete. The two albums that represent the current aspects of Arto’s music search are Avci, a movie soundtrack composed by the artist, and Bzidik Zinvor. Bzidik Zinvor has been recorded in Armenia and is the result of the very first meeting with several musicians from Yerevan. Arto’s original compositions express the sound of the past generations along with today’s life: this is what he calls “avantgarde folk”.
During the year 2000 THE ARMENIAN NAVY BAND has been touring Europe receiving great acclaim from the audience and enthusiastic music criticism. This experience will be collected in the next CD recorded in Istanbul for the Turkish label Imaj Müzik.

A native of Berkeley, California, Noah Garabedian holds a BA in Ethnomusicology from the The University of California Los Angeles, and a Master’s in Music Performance from New York University. In 2006 he was awarded a John Coltrane National Scholarship, and in 2007 was selected as a finalist for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz graduate program. In March of 2011, Mr. Garabedian was selected to participate with The Julian Pollack Trio in the Brad Mehldau Master Class at The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, and in June of that same year was selected as a finalist in the ISB Double Bass Competition.
As an educator Mr. Garabedian currently works with the music outreach program at Jazz At Lincoln Center, called Jazz For Young People. In the past he has served as adjunct faculty at NYU, taught at the Brooklyn Friend’s Summer Jazz Camp, Cazadero Music Camp, and participated in the music outreach program between UCLA and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
As a sideman, Mr. Garabedian has worked with Ravi Coltrane, Josh Roseman, Ralph Alessi, Andrew D’Angelo, Myron Walden, Ben Perowsky, Julian Pollack, Zongo Junction, as well as his own sextet Big Butter And The Egg Men.
Michael Sarian is a Canadian born musician and composer whose work has been heard throughout the United States, South America and Europe. Introduced to music at an early age, Michael began playing the piano at the age of six, was handed his first trumpet at 13, and was touring the United Kingdom by age 18. As a young adult in Buenos Aires, he studied with many of the best musicians in Argentina, including Juan “Pollo” Raffo and Juan Cruz de Urquiza, performed professionally with several groups, playing genres that ranged from tango to disco, and could even be seen onstage at the Teatro Colón, playing in what is considered to be one of the five best concert venues in the world.
As he grew older, Michael’s passion for developing new work drew him towards education, and by the age of 23, in addition to continuing to perform, he became a full-time music teacher at one of the top international schools in Argentina.
Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in composition from Muhlenberg College, where he studied with Charles Fambrough, Gary Rismiller and Douglas Ovens. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Jazz Performance at New York University, studying with great musicians such as Laurie Frink, Alan Ferber, Ralph Alessi and Mike Rodriguez. During his limited time in New York City, he has already played and recorded with musicians such as Joe Lovano, Mike Richmond and Lenny Picket, in venues throughout the city, including the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club.

SoundSketch is a musical ensemble embracing and celebrating the powerful union of the visual and the audio worlds. The balanced combination of instruments of varied origins offers innumerable audio palates for the listener. Most of Tatev’s compositions for Soundsketch are written to ornate and strengthen the visual experience of animations, films and cartoons. The openness, genial awareness of each sound and impact is essential for the members of SoundSketch for the unique union of Armenian, jazz and classical sounds, rely on such intricate details.
