Rafael Casal is a writer, performer and producer originally from the Bay Area, CA. Rafael got his start performing on three seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry, and as a creator online with over two million YouTube views and one million facebook hits for his music, poetry, web shorts and political commentary. His theater-in-verse work has brought him around the country & the world both in the realm of activism (Omega Center for Sustainable Living Conference, Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, etc.) and arts performance at hundreds of colleges and venues (Lincoln Center, San Francisco Opera House, NYU, Kennedy Center, etc.) His 3 musical releases (AGAYW LP, Monster LP, Mean Ones LP) have led to his music being placed on shows with MTV and Showtime, and features at SXSW & Sundance Film Festival.

Rafael served as Creative Director for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s First Wave Undergraduate arts program from 2008 to 2010, where he directed nearly 24 stage productions while curator for the LINE BREAKS Theater Festival. Under Casal’s creative direction in 2009, the First Wave program received the Governor’s Arts Award for arts programming.  His most recent theater work, THE LIMP, was originally developed in residency at UW-Madison and was presented as a solo production at IATI Theater in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Now, with collaborator Daveed Diggs (Broadway’s Hamilton), THE LIMP is being developed as an ensemble musical. Casal is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the BARS workshop at The Public Theater in New York, which received high praise from ELLE, TIME, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, TEEN VOGUE, SLATE & more. He just completed a new music project with Daveed Diggs to be released Spring 2017, while he is guest teaching for Playwrights Horizons, Tisch NYU.
