“Clone” is an improvisational dialogue between drummer and composer Qasim Naqvi and choreographer and performer Erin Ellen Kelly. Having worked together on a number of site specific projects for close to 17 years, they’ve held a shared interest in slow and restrained development. In the past, purely acoustic instrumentation has been the sonic backdrop for their work, from choral groups to chamber ensembles. This new work goes in a different direction with the introduction of analog modular electronics; a relatively new musical environment for Naqvi which has infinite possibilities. “Clone” is a magnification of a few elements, for a slow synchronicity between sound and movement.

Qasim Naqvi is a drummer, composer, and member of the group Dawn of Midi. When he is not touring with D.O.M., he composes music for film, dance, theater and chamber ensembles domestically and abroad. Qasim’s soundtracks and arrangements for film have appeared on HBO, PBS, The New York Times, The Academy Awards, The Sundance Film Festival, The Toronto Film Festival, dOCUMENTA 13 and 14, The Guggenheim Museum, Vice TV and others. His concert works have been performed by the yMusic Ensemble, The Now Ensemble, The Contemporary Music Ensemble of NYU, The Crash Ensemble, The Stargaze Ensemble, The Helsinki Chamber Choir, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW Season, The Bienen Contemporary/Early Vocal Ensemble, TEN PEN CHii, Nimbus Dance Works and others. He is a 2016 N.Y.F.A Fellow in Music and Sound and has received other fellowships and awards from Chamber Music America, Harvest Works, S.T.E.I.M., LMCC and Art OMI. Presently, Qasim writes chamber and electronic music in Brooklyn, New York and works on a variety of projects as a freelance composer and drummer. He is represented by Erased Tapes Publishing.

Erin Ellen Kelly constructs ways of moving, ephemeral collages and performance pieces in gardens, galleries, warehouse spaces, gutted stores, boats, bombed out buildings, theaters and by the side of the road. Her live performances have been presented at Danspace, Serpentine Slacker Gallery, The Queens Museum, Temporary/Contemporary: Bass Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Tacheles, Theatre Utopia and other venues. She has been awarded residencies through Movement Research, The Camargo Foundation, LMCC, Rogaland Kunstsenter, Schloss Brollin, and Thanksgiving Farm. She has collaborated with Christian Holstad, Aaron Taylor Kuffner, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, and Bisan Toron. The video series “Performed Places,” which was produced in partnership with Mariam Ghani and scored by Qasim Naqvi, has been presented at Documenta 13, Sharjah Biennial 09, Anchorage Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art and St. Louis Museum of Art.
