Max von Essen Max von Essen

Max recently completed a successful run in the Broadway revival of Evita, playing the role of Agustin Magaldi and frequently stepping in for Ricky Martin in the role of Che. He then made his NY Pops debut at Carnegie Hall and is currently working on concert, TV and film projects, in addition to developmental readings of new plays and musicals. Prior to Evita, he appeared as Corrado Montelli in the acclaimed world premiere of Maury Yeston’s Death Takes A Holiday at the Roundabout Theater Company.
 
Max also spent over a year roller skating across the country as Sonny Malone in Xanadu and performing at The Transport Group with the Drama League nominated cast of Hello Again.
 
On Broadway, Max played Enjolras in the revival of Les Misérables, Alfred in Dance of the Vampires starring alongside Michael Crawford, Jean Prouvaire in the closing company of the original Les Misérables, and a disciple in the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. In that production, Max understudied the role of Jesus and performed it many times. Other notable New York credits include Tremont in Jerry Springer: The Opera at Carnegie Hall, Woody in Finian’s Rainbow at the Irish Repertory Theatre, and Matt inThe Fantasticks at the Sullivan Street Playhouse.
 
Regionally, Max starred in the Paper Mill Playhouse production of The Baker’s Wife and the Kennedy Center’s staging of Mame. Other favorites include Danny Churchill in Girl Crazy, Anthony in Sweeney Todd, Dorian Gray in Dorian,  Fredric in Pirates of Penzance, Freddy in My Fair Lady, Claude in Hair, and Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Max’s first professional job after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was touring as a back up singer for the legendary Liza Minnelli.  He has also toured Europe as Tony in West Side Story and the USA as Mary Sunshine in Chicago.
 
Television and film appearances include The Good Wife, Royal Pains, Gossip Girl, The Beautiful Life, The Today Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Sex And The City 2, a recurring role on the hit web series Submissions Only, and numerous commercials.  Recordings include Evita, Finian’s Rainbow, Death Takes A Holiday, The Love Songs of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Broadway Musicals of 1928.
